School Dance Residencies

At Pulse Studios we know that education is critical in preserving the origins of Hip Hop dance and culture, which is often lost in the media’s interpretation. This is why we have developed a series of programs to reach youth and to teach them about Hip Hop and the culture that bears its name.

Our school residency program is designed to connect students to the many positive messages inherent in Hip Hop culture and to educate them about Hip Hop dance by building skills and techniques in Breaking, Popping, Locking, Hip Hop party dances and choreography. This high energy dance program is extremely flexible and can meet the needs of elementary, junior high and high school students. Our approach emphasizes peace, love, respect, unity, knowledge and having fun: elements that make up the foundation of Hip Hop culture. Residencies can be booked during school hours but we are also able to design after school programs if that serves your community better!

What to expect

Grades: K - 12
Featured Show: Something From Nothing (45 minutes)
Dance Styles: Breaking, Popping, Hip Hop, House Dance & Locking

During the residency we would ideally teach each student every day so that we have the maximum time for instruction. The classes are designed to engage students in a fun, safe environment and to promote the acquisition of skills that are specific to Hip Hop and Street Dance. In most cases the class programming is designed around regular Physical Education classes offered at your school but this can be adjusted to fit the needs of your school as you deem best. A qualified instructor will lead your students through warm up, share history and teach fundamental techniques from a broad range of streetdance styles.

learning circle with instructor and kids

“As a teacher of some of the most at-risk students in a school where socio economic barriers are present, I contacted Pulse studios to see what type of experiences they could offer our students. Meeting with the director, Tara Wilson, was a heart warming experience. Her passion for the arts, and dance in particular, combined with her understanding of how this form of expression could change children’s lives was an opportunity we could not turn down. Tara and her team of instructors came into our school and worked with our staff to develop a show which was personalized for every single student in our building. Through writing our Zero stories, the students opened up about times when they did not feel so good about themselves. With their Zero stories in mind, students developed and learned dance moves to express their feelings. The instructors were warm, patient and passionate about listening and helping the students find a way to express these emotions in the form of dance, all while building confidence that they could over come any barriers that they faced. After the two weeks were over, teachers commented on how students were now confident and excited to perform, when in the beginning many were very nervous and afraid. Our whole school performance included every child and the event was the most successful evening concert in years. Working with Tara and her team has directly impacted every student in our building. Words cannot express our gratitude."

— Tania Brown, Bridges Teaches, G.W. Skene

"The residency was simply amazing and Caroline and Justin were top notch in every way. They were kind, supportive and engaging for our students.  It was an absolute thrill for our students to learn these skills and get a chance to perform for our school community. Of special note the care and support they showed to our students with complexities was so appreciated and all of our hearts were full seeing them perform and be a part of this experience! We would love to have you again sometime to build on the work of this year!

— Leanne Murphy, Principal Cedarbrae School

"Thanks Tara. We had such a great time with Pulse and feedback from Thursday night was so very positive. We appreciate all your work and look forward to working with Pulse again in the future.”

— Kathryn Jones, Principal Colonel Walker School
