Gateway is creating a full-length show for June 16th at The GRAND

The Gateway Program comprises of (L-R): Jerico, Priyanka, Aaron, Delia, and Kusi (missing): Riley and Justin

Gateway is where future dance teachers are born.

The Gateway Program is a two-year pre-professional training program that equips dancers who are taking their craft to the next level with the tools and psychology to succeed as professionals in the dance industry.

Beyond choreography and teaching, these dancers explore the full gamut of their creative repertoire, from mixing music and stage lighting to Hip Hop fundamentals and everything in between to develop this full-length show, set to hit the stage on Sunday, June 16th at The Grand.

This year’s graduating class includes Aaron, Riley, Kusi, Priyanka, Jerico, Justin, and Delia.

The Gateway Show is an artistic expression of personal experience.

While the PULSE show showcases Calgary’s eclectic range of youth and professionals, the Gateway Show is an in-depth exploration of these seven individuals, translating their personal lives through storytelling and dance.

Involved in every aspect of the creative process, these dancers exercise mind, body, and spirit to develop a production that presents their individuality and creativity on full display and captivates your audio and visual senses.

“Some stories are told as solo performances while others are presented as group pieces. It really depends on how the dancer chooses to present their story.”

Creating this show was an emotional rollercoaster of fulfilment and obstacles.

Development involved sharing what they’ve been through to each other. It was a key ingredient to the overall process, allowing access and insight into what the others were working on to build a well-rounded experience.

As Priyanka puts it, “We came into this program as individuals, with our own ways of dancing. We then came together as a group, saw the way each of us danced and built a connection from it. We became one unit.”

The challenge came from committing to the endless possibilities of their art. She continues, “It's easy to scrap things and lose connection to what you're trying to say. Pieces are constantly going in and out.”

With artistic direction from studio owner and Gateway founder, Tara Wilson, Gateway harnessed collaboration and teamwork to make something meaningful for the audience.

The Gateway Show is designed to resonate to your own experiences.

As the two-year culmination of this graduating class comes to an end, Gateway designed this show to inspire you with artistic discovery.

“I think you’ll feel inspiration from diving into the emotional aspect and possibilities of expression. We hope to resonate with the audience who are going through similar life experiences and help them find their own resolve.”
